Peer Specialist Supervisor Training

(online, interactive training)

Peer Support Specialist Supervisor training is a two-day training that will equip participants with basic information to effectively supervise peer specialists. This training will focus on defining the basic expectations of a supervisor for peer specialists through exercises and information-sharing on the roles, principles, and values of peer specialists. This training will not cover the basics of supervision.

At the end of this training, participants should be able to:
• Identify the Texas Peer Specialist Supervisor Competencies
• Describe the concept of peerness and the values of peer support
• Differentiate roles and tasks that align with peer support values and competencies from those that do not align with peer support values and competencies
• Identify similarities and differences in the practice of peer support for Mental Health Peer Specialists and Recovery Support Peer Specialists
• Apply strength-based peer supervision to common situations that arise for peer specialists

This training is required to become a Peer Support Specialist Supervisor. The training is followed immediately by an online knowledge assessment. Once certified, a PSS must earn at least 20 CEUs, including 6 hours of peer specialist supervision and leadership training, every two years to maintain their certification. The certification program is administered according to the policies in the Texas Certification Board Policy Standards for Peer Support Specialist Supervisors.

TCI training content is provided via Zoom through an online learning platform. Participants will be required to have an active internet connection and be on camera for the majority of the training. Individual computer access is required; participants will not be able to log on in a group environment.

This 2-day training meets the requirements for people seeking the Peer Specialist Supervisor Certification under Texas Administrative Code, Rules 354.3105 and 354.3163. The certification qualification is necessary for organizations planning to bill Medicaid using the newly established Peer Services billing code.
